Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Where are the nearest grocery stores?
-
There is a small market in town about a 5-minute drive from the chalet that has your basic essentials
as well as some delicious sandwiches and desserts. For a full supermarket, we recommend Walmart in
Rumford or Mainely Provisions in Bethel. We recommend our guests purchase supplies on the way to
the home.

How far is the chalet from ski resorts?
-
Both Sunday River and Black Mountain are located about 30 minutes away from the chalet. Sunday
River is the second largest ski resort in Maine featuring 135 trails and a network of 18 ski lifts. Black
Mountain is a smaller, more family-friendly option offering over 50 trails as well as a tubing park.
Another option guests have is Mount Abram Ski Area offering over 40 trails and located around 40
minutes from the chalet. No matter what your skiing ability or budget are, these local ski resorts offer
something for everyone.

Where can I go ice fishing?
-
Ellis Pond (about 15 minutes from the chalet) has the closest ice fishing. Another option is Richardson
Lakes 45 minutes North in Rangeley. It takes a while for the ice to become thick enough to allow for ice
fishing, so typically it is an option in late December-early March depending on temperatures.

We are bringing our dog with us. Do you have any pet-friendly amenities?
-
We offer our four-legged guests use of a crate and dog bowls during their stay. We also provide dog
waste bags located at the top of the closet across from the washer and dryer. The back deck has a small
latching gate to help keep smaller dogs contained, however the yard is not fenced in so please exercise
caution with having your pups off-leash.

Where can we swim and escape the summer heat?
-
One of our favorite places to cool off is Flat Rocks, located just down the street, walking distance from
the chalet. Turn right out of the driveway and it will be 0.4 miles down the road on your left. It is a great place to dip your feet in and even has a deeper pool area at one end if you are brave enough to jump in the chilly mountain water. Another option nearby is Ellis Pond, a 900+ acre glacial lake in neighboring Roxbury located 15 minutes from the chalet. This lake offers a public beach as well as a public boat launch. If you are looking for a larger body of water, Richardson Lakes are located 45 minutes North of the chalet in Rangeley, Maine.

Where can I find good hikes in the area?
-
We have some of our favorite hikes listed on our website under Area Attractions. There are fantastic trails for all ages and abilities all around the chalet including several options in Grafton State Park. We recommend all guests download the AllTrails app to seek out trails to match your hiking abilities and keep informed of any
changes or closures due to weather events.
